24-Hour Clock Examples for Students
Updated June 20, 2026
The 24-hour clock is simple: instead of starting over at 1 after noon, it keeps counting. 1 PM = 13:00, 2 PM = 14:00, all the way to 11 PM = 23:00. The minutes never change. Think of it like a clock that just does not reset halfway through the day.
The one rule you need
For PM times (after noon), add 12 to the 12-hour number. 2 PM → 2 + 12 = 14:00. 7 PM → 7 + 12 = 19:00. For AM times (before noon), just keep the number as-is with a leading zero if needed: 8 AM = 08:00. Midnight is 00:00. Noon is 12:00 exactly. Try the converter to check your answer.
A student's day in 24-hour time
Here is a typical school day, shown both ways. Every time a student encounters has a simple 24-hour equivalent.

Why learn the 24-hour clock?
No more AM/PM confusion
Every hour gets its own number. 08:00 is always morning. 20:00 is always evening. There is no way to mix them up, which is why hospitals, airlines, and the military all use 24-hour time.
Used worldwide
Most countries outside the US use the 24-hour clock for schedules, transport, and official documents. If you travel, study abroad, or play online games with international friends, you will see it.
It is on every smartphone
iPhones and Androids can display 24-hour time. Switching your phone to 24-hour mode for a week is the fastest way to learn. You will pick it up without trying.
It is just math
Converting between 12 and 24-hour time is addition and subtraction by 12. If you can add 12, you can read any 24-hour clock in the world.
